CMABS News: September 17, 2025
Happy end of Summer! We hope you are all settling into your fall routines. Let’s dive into what is going on in the life of our city’s streets right now. ⤵️
City Council resolution calling on Caltrans to support safety upgrade on Newport Boulevard passes!
We asked our members to reach out to the City Council to support a resolution demanding Caltrans install safety upgrades to Newport Boulevard, and thanks to your activism, IT PASSED! Thank you to everyone who wrote, called in, and made public comments at City Council. Check out the staff report and resolution. We will keep you posted on any further developments.
HUGE street improvement project for Fairview Road passes!
We are excited to announce that, at the September 2, 2025 meeting, the City Council approved a $2.86 million active transportation and rehabilitation project for Fairview Road between Newport Boulevard and Fair Drive on a 6-1 vote. Council Member Jeff Pettis (District 6) voted against the project.
Why are we so hyped about this? Well, this stretch of Fairview will be narrowed from a monstrous six lanes to four, and in exchange will receive Class IV protected bike lanes with green conflict zones, high-visibility crosswalks at major intersections, and a new HAWK pedestrian signal. The crosswalk will help connect the communities on either side of Fairview Road. But perhaps our favorite new feature will be the floating bus boarding islands that will protect the bicycle lanes and support transit use along this corridor. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
The project will be funded through gas tax, traffic impact fees, federal grants, and Measure M2 funds. We couldn’t be more thrilled!
Costa Mesa’s Safe Routes to School Plan is underway! Here’s how to get involved
Ever since the city snagged a big federal grant to help support the drafting of a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) action plan, we’ve been anxious to see it get started. This plan will develop implementable recommendations to create safer and more comfortable walking and bicycling options for Costa Mesa students, their families, and residents near 23 public school campuses.
Want to get involved? Check out the info on the city’s website here, and add comments to the public feedback map and take the survey here. If you are a CMABS member, you know our streets better than anyone in the city. Your input is valuable! Please find some time to support the city’s efforts in this very important work.
Want to keep an eye on crashes in Costa Mesa? Check out our new crash map!
It’s incredibly hard to keep up with the scope of traffic violence occurring Costa Mesa’s streets. To give you an idea about what is going on, we’ve set up a Google map that tracks all crashes occurring on our streets in the past month. Head to our website for an interactive map of crashes that occurred just this past August—as you can see below, it’s a lot! We will continue to request this data from the police department and make these maps each month going forward. Please feel free to share the link above with others—we have become desensitized to the scale of the pointless destruction on our streets and we need to urgently work together to reverse this trend.
Blue: collision involving ≥2 cars
Red: collision involving someone on a bicycle
Yellow: collision involing someone on foot

Costa Mesa to host another e-bike skills workshop
In response to concerns about unsafe e-biking by kids and teenagers, the City of Costa Mesa is sponsoring another e-bike skills workshop put on by Walk n’ Rollers on Saturday, September 27 starting at 10:00am at TeWinkle Middle School. These are great events for families with kids who ride e-bikes. Sign your student up so they can learn about their bike, get a tune up, receive a free helmet, and learn how to ride safely!
