Reminder: CMABS Fall Social THIS SUNDAY!
The CMABS Fall Social/General Meeting is THIS SUNDAY, September 28 at 5:00pm!
Join members of the CMABS board and friends of the organization for an evening of conversation and camaraderie. If you are new to the active transportation scene, these events are great opportunities to meet the folks involved in walking, bicycling and transit advocacy and learn about ways to get involved. We will also be discussing upcoming projects and challenges for the City of Costa Mesa regarding its active transportation plans. We hope to see you there!
And, as a reminder: car parking is tight at Green Cheek, especially around dinner time. Consider using transit (for the Westside, the 71 bus getting off at Baker/Century isn’t terrible), walking if you are nearby, or bicycling if you want to avoid the parking headache. If you plan to bike, remember to BRING LIGHTS since we will likely wrap up after dark.
In addition to the upcoming social, we’ve got a number of other cool events coming up ⤵️
Costa Mesa to host e-bike skills workshop this Saturday
In response to concerns about unsafe e-biking by kids and teenagers, the City of Costa Mesa is sponsoring another e-bike skills workshop put on by Walk n’ Rollers on Saturday, September 27 starting at 10:00am at TeWinkle Middle School. Students are welcome to drop in any time—they do not need to stay for the entire event. Sign your student up so they can learn about their bike, get a tune up, receive a free helmet, and learn how to ride safely!
CMABS will hosts a bike ride with OCPOP!
Orange County for People Oriented Places (OCPOP, formerly Strong Towns OC), is in the midst of its summer bike tour. CMABS will be hosting the last two rides of the summer, which are scheduled to take place on October 4, 2025 in south county and on October 18, 2025 in Costa Mesa. Start times and locations are TBD. Follow this newsletter and the OCPOP Instagram page for updates!
The Safe Routes to School map and survey are still up—awaiting your comments!
From the SRTS website:
Following receipt of Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Grant, the City of Costa Mesa is developing its first comprehensive Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Plan. Through this SRTS Plan, in collaboration with Newport Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) and the City, intends to develop implementable recommendations to create more safe and comfortable walking and bicycling options for Costa Mesa students, their families, and residents near 23 public school campuses. Building upon OCTA’s countywide Safe Routes to School Action Plan, the Costa Mesa plan will recommend strategies for improving student safety at the city level. This initiative underscores Costa Mesa’s commitment to creating environments where youth can travel to and from school safely and comfortably by walking, biking, rolling, or other sustainable travel mode.
Here is the link to the interactive map and survey where you can provide the valuable information and experience you have to those planning improvments. Please share this with your friends and neighbors!
City’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan and Measure K rezoning surveys close September 30
Time is running out to make your voice heard on two of the City’s big upcoming initiatives: its Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) and the rezoning of the Measure K sites, known colloquially as “Neighborhoods Where We All Belong”. The CAAP will cover planning for more than just energy and water use; it also touches on transportation and land use as well. And the Measure K rezoning will absolutely impact the future of transportation in the city, as it will plan for development along some of its busiest (and most dangerous) transportation corridors.
Check out the CAAP survey here, and the “Neighborhoods Where We All Belong” survey here. And stay tuned: the CMABS board will be sending a letter with our thoughts on the rezoning to the City Council for its next meeting, so keep an eye out for that!
Congratulations to Costa Mesa’s Public Works team for winning an ASCE award for the Pinecreek/Adams intersection project!
Pop the champagne, Public Works! Costa Mesa won a well-deserved award for Outstanding Bikeway and Trails from the American Society of Civil Engineers (Orange County) for the reimagining of the intersection of Pinecreek Drive and Adams Avenue. Head over to the award announcement for some gorgeous photos of the new installation — or check out CMABS board member David Martinez’s Instagram post exploring it on bike. It’s beautiful and we couldn’t be prouder!
There’s a change.org petition circulating for a crosswalk at Jordan Park
We spotted this petition on change.org and thought we would pass it along. The petition requests the city consider a midblock crosswalk between Windward Lane and Francisco Drive to permit neighbors, students, and parkgoers to more easily cross Tustin Avenue and reach Kaiser Elementary School, the Boys and Girls Club, and Jordan Park.
While we are very hopeful that a holistic rethink of Tustin Avenue will be included in the City’s ongoing Safe Routes to School Action Plan project, we can’t help but be encouraged by residents seeing problems in their streets and making their voices heard. There is so much energy out there for safer streets!
