CMABS News: August 4, 2025
We hope you are all having a wonderful summer. Alas, safe street advocacy doesn’t take vacations. We’ll keep it short, but there are a few things to put on your radar ⤵️
Caltrans is refusing to add needed safety measures to Newport Boulevard. Help the City Council send a message a clear message: UNACCEPTABLE!
Some of you may have participated in a meeting with Caltrans about potential upgrades to the Newport Boulevard corridor (from the Newport Beach border up through the intersection with 19th Street) a little over two years ago, where Caltrans got an earful from Costa Mesa residents DEMANDING that it address the unsafe conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists along this stretch be addressed. Now we’re hearing that Caltrans is well into the design process for its Newport Boulevard project, and they STILL haven’t included safety measures that Costa Mesa city staff believes are critical to protect Costa Mesa residents.
Want to help send a message to Caltrans that we won’t accept this? TOMORROW the City Council will consider a resolution to take a position on the Newport Boulevard project and demand that safety upgrades, such as completing crosswalks at intersections and adding pedestrian safety improvements, be a part of the Caltrans project. You can read the proposed resolution and the staff report.
Want to help? Write an email and submit it to the City Clerk before 12:00pm tomorrow, Tuesday, August 5. We’ve made it easy for you: click here and send our form email, or start there and add your own thoughts and projects! The more personalization, the better!

Mark your calendars for the upcoming local meetings of interest:
Costa Mesa City Council Meeting
Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2025
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Costa Mesa City Hall
As discussed above, there is a resolution regarding safety improvements along Newport Boulevard that will be considered as part of the consent calendar. Also on the consent calendar is the resolution to accept the (gorgeous) work done at the Adams and Pinecreek intersection.
Costa Mesa Active Transportation Committee Meeting
Date: Wednesday, August 6, 2025
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Costa Mesa City Hall, Conference Room A1
The ATC will review the Caltrans resolution and it will also have a discussion about the proposed improvements to the slip lane from Newport Boulevard to Fair Drive. We’ve heard that the raised crosswalk floated for that slip lane might be in jeopardy — that would be a shame. If you have the time, it would be great to go and ask to keep that improvement. Safe routes to school audits are also on the agenda.
That’s all for now. Have a great week!
