Hey everyone! ☀️ 😎

Free Bike Maintenance Day a Huge Success

Our recent Free Bike Maintenance Day in partnership with the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries was a tremendous success. The awesome volunteer mechanics from our friends at Lillördag spent about four hours working in the summer heat, tuning up and repairing several dozen bicycles. They fixed brakes, chains, and other components and installed useful accessories where possible.

We’re planning on doing the next one at the Bridge Shelter. We hope to visit on a Sunday afternoon in the next few weeks for a couple of hours, and we could use the help of anyone experienced in bicycle maintenance.

Concrete-Protected Bike Lanes Arrive on Adams Avenue

Costa Mesa’s new protected bike lanes on Adams Avenue are ready for use! These are the first bike lanes in the city protected by solid concrete barriers rather than plastic bollards—a major step forward for safety and comfort.

Their location is especially important because Adams Avenue runs alongside OCC, connect east with Fairview Road where additional work is planned, and west to future improvements that are planned to extend to Huntington and the Santa Ana River Trail.

Hundreds Ride to Concerts in the Park (As Usual)

This summer’s Concerts in the Park series was a huge success—and so was the turnout by bike. Hundreds of bikes filled the park, with many attendees arriving via the new protected bike lanes on Placentia Avenue.

Seeing so many people choose to ride is a powerful reminder that when safe, comfortable routes are available, people use them.

Visit Us at An Afternoon at the Adobe

We expect to host our final community booth of the summer at An Afternoon at the Adobe on Saturday, August 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free event will celebrate the Costa Mesa Historical Society’s 60th anniversary at the historic Diego Sepúlveda Adobe and Estancia Park, 1900 Adams Avenue. Stop by our booth and say hello!

Candidate Questionnaire Coming Soon

In the next few weeks, we will release our candidate questionnaire for the upcoming Costa Mesa election. Three City Council seats and the mayor’s office will be on the ballot.

This will be the fourth election in which we have invited candidates to share their positions on safer streets and transportation. We expect to ask approximately five straightforward questions and will publish every participating candidate’s answers verbatim so voters can read and compare their responses directly.

Save the Date: World Day of Remembrance

Please mark your calendar for Sunday, November 15, when we will once again observe World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

We expect to host what may be the only event of its kind in Orange County. Last year’s gathering drew a great turnout, and we hope the community will join us again.

We will likely gather at Costa Mesa City Hall, hear from several speakers and then ride together through the city. Along the way, we will make several stops to discuss the steps Costa Mesa has taken—and the work still ahead—to improve street safety and save lives.

More event details will be announced as November approaches.

That’s all for now. Stay safe!
